Smarty River: Early Warning System (EWS) for floods and hydrological monitoring

What is Smarty River

Smarty River is a comprehensive application that allows you to easily and in real time record, view, manage alarms, and share data on the monitoring and status of rivers and reservoirs.

This data is collected by the Sensor Stations and sent to the web application.

Smarty River is a self-sufficient sensory solution specifically designed as a Decision Support System (DSS) in the event of flooding and overflow risks in towns, campsites, riverside walks, residential areas, etc.

This technology reduces the costs of large-scale infrastructure projects such as Hydrological Information Alert Systems (HIAS) or gauging systems in ditches, reservoirs, pipelines, canals, and drains.

Super-reduced maintenance

Visually easy

Each and every parameter controlled by the stations is visible from the web platform.

Current time

Rainfall

It allows us to know the current rainfall and accumulated precipitation; significant values for understanding the increase in river flow.

The flow of the river

Know the river's flow and trend. A high flow and rising trend can indicate flood risk. We can anticipate the risk.

The temperature

During the thaw, it's important to know the temperature. Higher readings can indicate more pronounced thawing and increased river flow.

Benefits of Smarty River

  • Knowledge of current and reliable data on the level of flood risk in the territory.
  • Secure control in emergency situations through immediate alerts and warnings.
  • Easy access to river flow status from any fixed or mobile device connected to the Internet.
  • Easy creation and management of statistics and historical data.
  • Quick and easy installation and configuration of the sensor network and web platform.
  • Remote monitoring of the flow rate evolution of canals, fountains and irrigation ditches.

Floods have been and will continue to be one of the most devastating and inevitable natural disasters. The main cause of the increase in flooding is climate change. Climate change has led to increased rainfall, which is a determining factor in flooding.

Success stories

Early Warning System for Flood Risk in the Garonne River Basin (Val d'Aran-Lleida)

In 2013, a network of SmartyRiver Stations was installed on the Garonne River. These stations measure the water level and other hydrological parameters using ultrasound or radar. The stations remotely monitor the risk of flooding in real time, without requiring a power supply. The sensor visualization platform is publicly accessible: conselh.smartyplanet.com.

Early Flood Risk Warning System for the Pyrenees (Risqhydro Project)

Supply, installation and commissioning of a system of 32 stations for alerts in front of avenues at the head of the watersheds of the regions of Alta Ribagorça, Alt Urgell, Pallars Jussaa, Pallars Sobirà and the territory of the Val d'Aran and the Community of Communes of Canton Saint du Francia (France)

Installation of Hydrological Stations for the Duero Hydrographic Confederation (Burgos and Palencia)

Supply, installation, and commissioning of compact integrated hydrological stations at the gauging stations of Barbadillo del Pez (Burgos) and Otero de Guardo (Palencia).

Installation of a remote control system in the Santa Lucía and Peraleda de San Román reservoirs (Cáceres)

Installation of SmartyRiver stations in reservoirs to read and send data to the Mérida Control Center using equipment with autonomous power supply and GPRS communications.

Supply and installation of an Early Warning System for the Sió River through Smarty River (Lleida)

Installation of a measurement and early warning system to prevent the effects of the 2015 flood from happening again, by installing several sensors at strategic points along the Sió River to allow the population to know the risk of a possible flood or "Rovinada" in real time.
