Smarty River: Early Warning System (EWS) for floods and hydrological monitoring

What is Smarty River?

Smarty River is a complete application that allows, in a simple and real-time way, to register, view, manage alarms and share data on the monitoring and status of rivers and reservoirs.

This data is collected by the Sensor Stations and sent to the web application.

Smarty River is a self-sufficient sensory solution specifically designed as a Decision Support System (DSS) in case of risk of flooding and overflow in towns, campsites, river walks, urbanizations, etc.

This technology reduces the costs of large infrastructures for Hydrological Information Alert Systems (SAIH) or flow measurement in ditches, reservoirs, pipes, canals, drains…

Plug and play installation

Without complicated infrastructure

Better cost-benefit ratio

Multiple sensors

Wireless communication

Unlimited autonomy

Resistant

Sensor networks

Web display

Super-reduced maintenance

Visually easy

Every single parameter controlled by the stations is visible from the web platform

Current time

Rainfall measurement

It allows us to know the current rainfall and accumulated precipitation; significant values for understanding the increase in river flow.

The river's flow

Knowing the river's flow rate and its trend is crucial. High flow rates and an upward trend can indicate a risk of flooding. We can anticipate this risk.

The temperature

During the thaw, it's important to know the temperature. High values can indicate a more pronounced thaw and an increase in river flow.

Benefits of Smarty River

  • Knowledge of current and reliable data on the level of flood risk in the territory.
  • Safe control in emergency situations through immediate alerts and notifications.
  • Easy access to the riverbed status from any fixed or mobile device connected to the internet.
  • Easy creation and management of statistics and historical data.
  • Easy and quick installation and configuration of the sensor network and web platform.
  • Remote monitoring of the evolution of flow rates in canals, fountains and irrigation ditches.

Floods have been and will continue to be one of the most devastating and unavoidable natural disasters. The main cause of the increase in floods is climate change. Climate change has led to an increase in rainfall, which is a determining factor in flooding.

Success stories

Early Warning System for Flood Risk in the Garona River Basin (Val d'Aran-Lleida)

In 2013, a network of SmartyRiver stations was installed on the Garonne River. These stations use ultrasound or radar to measure water levels and other hydrological parameters. They monitor the risk of flooding remotely in real time, without requiring a power supply. The sensor data visualization platform is publicly accessible at conselh.smartyplanet.com.

Early Warning System for Flood Risk in the Pyrenees Regions (Risqhydro Project)

Supply, installation and commissioning of a system of 32 stations for alerts in front of avenues at the head of the watersheds of the regions of Alta Ribagorça, Alt Urgell, Pallars Jussaa, Pallars Sobirà and the territory of the Val d'Aran and the Community of Communes of Canton Saint du Francia (France)

Installation of Hydrological Stations for the Duero River Basin Authority (Burgos and Palencia)

Supply, installation and commissioning of compact integrated hydrological stations at the gauging stations of Barbadillo del Pez (Burgos) and Otero de Guardo (Palencia)

Installation of a remote control system in the Santa Lucía and Peraleda de San Román reservoirs (Cáceres)

Installation of SmartyRiver stations in reservoirs for reading and sending data to the Mérida Control Center using equipment with autonomous power supply and GPRS communications

Supply and installation of an Early Warning System for the Sió River using Smarty River (Lleida)

Installation of a measurement and early warning system to try to prevent a repeat of the effects of the 2015 flood, installing several sensors at strategic points of the Sió River that allow the population to know in real time the risk of a possible flood or “Rovinada”
