Smarty Snow: Prevention and control system of landslides or avalanches of snow, and management of roads during winter season
What is Smarty Snow
Smarty Snow is a complete application that allows recording, visualizing, managing alarms and sharing environmental and snow data in a easy and real-time way. These data are collected by sensor stations and sent to the application web.
This technology controls the risk of snow avalanches on the mountain, avoiding damage to infrastructures and ski resorts. In addition, the current costs of manual measurements are reduced, reaching many more measurement points, since it is more economical than the current solutions and has the same reliability and rigor.
Smarty Snow is a self-contained sensing solution integrated with social networks and is specially designed to be adapted to the demanding conditions of the winter sector.

Smarty Snow’s benefits
- Monitor the volume of snow of large areas without costly displacement.
- Provide historical data on the behaviour and evolution of snow and ski resorts.
- Height of snow at different situations in real time and optimize artificial snow system.
- Know the temperature of the snow from home for Nordic skiing.
- Know the avalanches risk and minimize the risk for the people.

Snow is considered as a natural resource of high value in its leisure aspect. Users of ski resorts require more and more information about their favorite sport, especially they like to know the current snow depth of each track, its temperature and environmental conditions to get well equipped from home.

On the other hand, the snow of the mountains and headwaters of basin supposes a fundamental hydro deposit that will be transformed into water during the warm months. For the management of these water resources it is imperative to know the volume of these water reserves in the form of snow.

At present, the access of hikers to the mountain during the winter season is increasing in recent years. That is why the managers of the territory carry out campaigns to monitor the risk of avalanches and control of snow cover to minimize the danger to people and infrastructures.
Success cases
Remote monitoring of anti-avalanche nets in the Pyrenees

It installs a SmartySnow station, totally autonomous and wireless, that measures the thickness of snow as well as the temperature and humidity. An avalanche Early Warning System is installed through a load cell that measures the tension of the snow avalanche protection nets.

Supply and installation of telenivometric station of scientific degree for the management of avalanche risk on the Canfranc road (“La Raca”)

The installation of the Station allows continuous, remote and real time information of Snow Depth, Solar Radiation, Total Rainfall, Ambient Temperature and Relative Humidity, which is installed at a height of 2,200 m above the level of the Sea, in the surroundings of the zone of triggering of avalanches. It has photovoltaic power and remote connection by GSM.

Avalanche detection system and automatic closing of the access road to ski resort Le Mourtis. Haute-Garonne. France

It installs a SmartySnow station, totally autonomous and wireless, that measures the thickness of snow as well as the temperature and humidity. An avalanche Early Warning System is installed through a load cell that measures the tension of the snow avalanche protection nets.
Weather station and remote webcam for control of avalanches in highway A-2606 of access to Panticosa

A snow-meteorological station and a remote web-cam are installed with the objective of controlling adverse weather phenomena well in advance to avoid possible traffic cuts and accidents, as well as to optimize the maintenance of the A-2606 access road to Panticosa.
