Smarty Snow: Snow avalanche prevention and control system and winter maintenance management
What is Smarty Snow?
Smarty Snow is a complete application that allows, in a simple and real-time way, to record, visualize, manage and share environmental and snow sector data. This data is collected by remote sensor stations and then sent to the web application.
This technology makes it possible to control the risk of avalanches or snow flows in the mountain, avoiding damage to infrastructure and ski resorts. In addition, the current costs of manual measurements are reduced, which allows to reach many more measurement points, as it is more economical than current solutions and has the same reliability and rigor.
Smarty Snow is an autonomous sensory solution integrated with social networks and is specially designed to adapt to the harsh conditions of the winter sector.

Benefits of Smarty Snow
- Monitor the volume of snow over large areas without costly travel.
- Have historical data on the behaviour and evolution of snow in ski resorts.
- Know the snow thicknesses at different points in real time and optimize artificial innivation.
- Know the snow temperature at home for Nordic ski lovers.
- Remotely know the condition of avalanche risk areas and reduce the risk to people.

Snow is considered a natural resource of great value in its playful aspect. Users of ski resorts need more and more data about their favorite sport, especially to know the current snow thickness of each track, its temperature and the environmental conditions to get out of the house well equipped.

On the other hand, snow from mountains and watersheds is a critical water reservoir that will turn into water during the warmer months. For the management of these water resources, it is essential to know the volume of these water reserves in the form of snow.

In recent years, the access of hikers to the mountain in winter has increased. This is why the managers of the territory conduct avalanche risk monitoring and snow cover control campaigns to minimize the danger to people and infrastructure.
Use cases
Remote monitoring of anti-avalanche networks in the Pyrenees

A fully autonomous and wireless SmartySnow station is installed to measure snow depth as well as ambient temperature and humidity. An early avalanche warning system is installed through a load cell that measures the tension of the snow avalanche protection wire mesh.

Supply and installation of a scientific-grade telemetry station for avalanche risk management on the Canfranc road («La Raca»)

The installation of the station provides continuous, remote and real-time information on snow depth, solar radiation, the totalizer rain gauge, ambient temperature and relative humidity, which is at an altitude of 2200 m above sea level, andabove sea level, around the avalanche trigger zone. It has a photovoltaic power supply and a remote connection by GSM.

Avalanche detection system and automatic closure of the access road to the Le Mourtis ski area. Haute-Garonne. France

A fully autonomous and wireless SmartySnow station is installed to measure snow depth as well as ambient temperature and humidity. An early avalanche warning system is installed through a load cell that measures the tension of the snow avalanche protection wire mesh.
Remote nivometeorological station and camera for the control of avalanches on road access to Panticosa A-2606

Installation of a weather station and a remote webcam to monitor adverse weather phenomena in good time to avoid possible traffic interruptions and accidents and to optimize the maintenance of the A-2606 access road to Panticosa.
