Smarty River: Early Warning System (SAT) for floods and hydrological monitoring

What is Smarty River?

Smarty River is a complete application that allows, in a simple and real-time way, to record, visualize, manage alarms and share data on the monitoring and condition of rivers and reservoirs.

This data is collected by the detection stations and sent to the web application.

Smarty River is an autonomous sensory solution designed specifically as a decision support system (SAD) in case of flood and overflow risk in populations, campsites, river walks, urbanizations, etc.

This technology can reduce the costs of large infrastructure hydrological warning systems (SAIH) or capacity in canals, reservoirs, pipes, canals, drains…

Rainfall
It allows to know the current precipitation and the accumulated precipitation; significant values to know the increase of the flow in the rivers.

The river flow
Know the flow of the river and its trend. A high flow and increasing trend may indicate a risk of flooding. We can anticipate the risks.

Temperature
During snowmelt, it is important to know the temperature. High values may indicate rapid melting and increased river flow.

Benefits of Smarty River

Floods have been and will be one of the most devastating and inevitable natural disasters. The main cause of increased flooding is climate change. Climate change has caused an increase in rainfall, a key aspect of flooding.

At this stage, the most important in this situation are the preliminary measures and their early detection. Predicting that a river may overflow long enough in advance can trigger contingency plans, evacuations, and many other actions to avoid great harm.

Use cases

Early warning system for flood risks in the Garonne basin (Val d'Aran-Lleida)

A network of SmartyRiver stations was installed in 2013 on the Garonne River that measure the level of the water sheet and other hydrological parameters by ultrasound or radar. The stations monitor the risk of bed overflow in real time remotely and without power supply. The sensor display platform is publicly accessible: conselh.smartyplanet.com.

Early warning system for the Pyrenean regions (Risqhydro project)

Supply, installation and commissioning of a system of 32 stations for alerts to the avenues upstream of the watersheds of the counties of Alta Ribagorça, Alt Urgell, Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà and the territory of the Val d’Aran and the Community of Municipalities of the Canton of Saint-Béat (France)

Installation of hydrological stations for the Douro Hydrographic Confederation (Burgos and Palencia)

Supply, installation and commissioning of integrated compact hydrological stations in Barbadillo del Pez (Burgos) and Otero de Guardo (Palencia)

Installation of remote control system in the reservoirs of Santa Lucía and Peraleda de San Román (Cáceres)

Installation of SmartyRiver stations in tanks for reading and sending data to the Mérida Control Centre using equipment with autonomous power and communications via GPRS

Supply and installation of an early warning system for the Sió River by Smarty River (Lleida)

Installation of a measurement and early warning system to prevent repeated effects of the 2015 Avenue, by installing several sensors at strategic points of the Sió River that allow the population to know in real time the risk of a possible flood or “Rovinada”
