The CIM (Intermunicipal Community) of the Coimbra Region is a collective of municipalities that includes the towns of Arganil, Cantanhede, Coimbra, Condeixa-a-Nova, Figueira da Foz, Góis, Lousã, Mealhada, Mira, Miranda do Corvo, Montemor-o-Velho, Mortágua, Oliveira do Hospital, Pampilhosa da Serra, Penacova, Penela, Soure, Tábua, and Vila Nova de Poiares, located in Portugal. The CIM’s development is based on a supra-municipal strategy that respects the political autonomy of each municipality while allowing for a stronger intervention with economic, social, and cultural agents to enhance the region’s values and affirm its position within the national context.

The actions developed among its 19 municipalities and central government services are based on the following areas:

  • Public water supply networks, basic sanitation infrastructure, wastewater treatment, and urban waste management.
  • Healthcare network.
  • Education and vocational training network.
  • Land planning, nature conservation, and natural resources.
  • Security and civil protection.
  • Mobility and transportation.
  • Public equipment networks.
  • Promotion of economic, social, and cultural development.
  • Cultural, sports, and leisure facilities network.

As part of the “Innovative Actions for Risk Prevention and Management within the Pact for Development and Social Cohesion” initiative approved by the “Autoridade de Gestão do Programa Operacional Sustentabilidade e Eficiência na Utilização dos Recursos” (POSEUR), the CIM Region de Coimbra decided to acquire a series of monitoring technological resources for the Emergency Decision Support and Management System (SAGDE).

The acquisition of these resources involved awarding Wind-Up (http://www.windup.pt/), a partner of Arantec in Portugal, the purchase and installation of 9 fog or visibility control stations on roads and 8 hydrometric monitoring stations in the region.

The visibility stations have been located at the following points:

And they consist of a data logger, solar panel power system, protective cabinet, 3G modem, and visibility sensors with a range of 3,000 m, as shown in the following image:

The hydrometric stations have been installed in the following locations:

And they consist, like the previous ones, of data logger, solar power system, protective cabinet with display, 3G modem, and water level sensors by pressure, as shown in the following image.

Arantec Engineering has installed all these control points with the collaboration of Megajoule (www.megajoule.pt) in just a couple of weeks, and has integrated them, despite having its own data management and alarm platform, within the interface owned by CIM Región de Coimbra.

With this project, Arantec continues its international expansion into neighboring Portugal and expands its experience in the road sector by providing the installation of fog control sensors to the previous installations designed for avalanche control on road infrastructures.
